Unfu*k Yourself - Gary John Bishop
This is not my most favorite book, but it is one that has some very important aspects to understand when it comes to changing your lifestyle. We all have tendencies to get stuck in cycles and it takes a hard hitting approach to be honest with yourself and come to terms with self change. The book walks you through a number of self affirmations that focuses on keeping it simple. Points in the book are difficult to get through, but overall it will challenge you to challenge the perceptions of dogma you have locked yourself into.

Chi Running - Danny Dreyer
For those of you who are runners or just thinking about adding running to your exercise regimen, this book is a must read. Chi Running does a very good job explaining the most important mechanics of proper running. Once mastered, the efficiencies you gain from the book will help you keep running well into your old age. Danny Dreyer puts a laser focus on improving your running form that will lead to fewer injuries and a more enjoyable running experience. Danny takes a very philosophical approach to your running that helps increase your overall health in his unique informational style of writing.
Each chapter breaks down aspects of running, starting in the first chapter comparing power running to Chi Running then he takes you into the five principles where he brings TaiChi together with running for the basis of Chi Running. The book continues building on philosophical foundation that helps you establish specific techniques that really bring form and function into focus. As you get farther into the book, it dives into specific physical and mental methods that can be used to run more efficiently. Then Danny pulls in proper performance training and diet to make this book well rounded for any level of runner. Finally, the book goes into some of the more problematic and common injuries such as cramping, plantar fasciitis and other injuries. This book would be good for elite runners or those weekend runners, it has something for very level of runner. |
The Power of Myth – Joseph Campbell
I am sure many of you have read this book at some point in the last 28 years, but there are many who have not and it is a great book to re-read if it’s been awhile. If your high school aged kids have not read this book, I recommend it for any young traveler of life. This book to me is as much a health and wellness book as it is a book of myths, history wisdom and spirituality. Joseph Campbell takes you on a journey of finding our inward self and the inner harmony within ourselves. I think this book can be foundational to a well-balanced life, giving understanding into so many aspects of true wellness. Campbell's philosophies certainly go deep into how our belief systems work and the effect it has on how we live a motivated life.

Wheat Belly - William Davis
Wheat Belly has a lot of answers to questions that I was not able to find in other similar books. A few years ago, I was interested in learning more about ancient wheat and how it differs from today's heavily hybridized varieties. Wheat belly is very informative and connects many health issues directly to our modern hybridized wheat. I have reduced grain intake over the past few years and have seen inches drop off and weight gains stabilize. This book gives you a positive scientific view at grains and why they are linked to the many health related problems many of us deal with.
This book is not without controversy and many people do not believe grains are as problematic as the book suggest. As you read the book, there are many claims too extreme to believe. On the other side of the extreme claims are factual data showing health improvements, weight loss and autoimmune issues stopped after dropping grain. One of the more interesting points in the book is how stopping grains affects food cravings. I found this to be true in my own diet that after dropping grains, my cravings pretty much stopped. There is no doubt that removing grains from your diet is a very difficult thing to do, but reading this book certainly motivated me to make the effort. |
The Healing Self - Deepak Chopra & Rudoph E. Tanzi
This book comes with a blended understanding of science with deep understanding of the human mind. This book does a great job finding the balance between our body and how we can manage it through nutrition, diet, reducing inflammation in the body, stress, and aging by leveraging the mind-body connection. Deeper into the book, they explore conscious evolution and how humans can effortlessly and spontaneously transcend into a healing spiritual realm.

Spark – John J. Ratey
Spark is a great read for anyone wishing to transform their health and wellness. Often when you try to start an exercise regimen, it is your mind that blocks your desire to exercise. This book can help you understand the amazing benefits exercise has on your mental state and mental health. Although this book does have sections that deep dive a bit much for laymen regarding Neuroscience, it certainly explains the positive effects exercise has on the brain. There are so many takeaways in the book that can be applied to you and your family’s concerns about mental health issues and even mental problems as we age. Spark gets right to it in the first chapter where the author shows how a few unconventional school districts increased test scores and lowered behavioral issues by introducing morning exercise programs.
